Oakland Schools Volunteer Faire - held September 12, 2009Potential volunteers streamed into the library's West Auditorium Sept. 12th to commit their time and attention to the students of Oakland. Of the nearly 300 participants, many found placement with more than one of the presenters, who were delighted to meet such highly capable volunteers. Our partners were amazed by the great turnout, read their testimonials.
Oakland’s new superintendent, Dr. Tony Smith, and Councilwoman Jean Quan both addressed the crowd and thanked them for their participation. Thanks to Hawkridge Systems for the critical seed money early in our planning, Trader Joe's and Semifreddi's for refreshments and to all those who contributed to the success of this endeavor.

Participating Organizations Declare the Volunteer Faire a Success! Dear Montclair Action Group: GREAT Job! Thank you so much for all the hard work you put in to make the event Saturday a success. I did not get a chance to sit once; my email and voicemail are full with potential "new" volunteers for OUSD. You all should be proud of the contribution you have made to a young person in Oakland being impacted by a committed adult volunteer. I truly appreciate your efforts and look forward to partnering with you again in the future.

Dear Montclair Action Group, Again, many thanks to you and the Montclair Community Action Group for the outstanding event on Saturday. The Volunteer Faire was beautifully organized, and the most productive three hours of volunteer recruiting I can recall in our program's history. We were inundated with offers from highly qualified volunteers, and couldn't be more pleased. I was nearly hoarse at the end of hour one and glad I had reinforcements from others in our program to greet and talk with potential volunteers.
What a boon to Oakland schools! Your proclamation is well deserved.
Best wishes for your continued success in bringing the community into the schools to help students learn and succeed. We look forward to working with you in the future.
Sincerely,

Dear Montclair Community Action Group,
I just wanted to thank you for inviting us to your volunteer faire this past weekend. It was a great event and an amazing opportunity for us to reach out to the community and build new relationships. We were able to make 29 new connections and hopefully new tutors! Thank you again for everything. Good luck with the new year. If there is anything we can do for you, we would love to build a stronger relationship with you.
Best,

"The Montclair Action Group Volunteer Faire far exceeded our expectations. Often times these community events can be sleepy and/or poorly attended. The quality, diversity and sheer quantity of people that turned out was so impressive, as was all the effort put into organizing it by the MAG and the support received by local government. I cannot say enough about it how effective it was in reaching the community - and our large list of interested and highly qualified volunteers that signed up that day is proof of that!
Thank you again for mobilizing such a caring and generous group of people to organize this event - it was wonderful.
Kind regards,
